Step by step instructions on configuring the pine email client.

In order to use pine to read email, you will need to have a version of pine that supports SSL. Newer versions of pine on newer Linux systems support SSL by default.

To configure pine, follow these instructions:

  1. Startup pine.
  2. Go to the Setup menu by typing "s".
  3. Go to the Config menu by typing "c".
  4. Select "inbox-path" by using the arrow keys to move the cursor to "inbox-path" and hitting carriage return.
  5. Set the "inbox-path" entry (Note that the { and } are REQUIRED and are curly braces NOT square brackets or parenthesis.)
    • use {rcf.rhic.bnl.gov/user=username/ssl/novalidate-cert} where username is your Unix account name.
  6. When prompted for the "Folder on "rcf.rhic.bnl.gov/..." to use for INBOX [inbox]:" accept the default by hitting carriage return.
  7. Select "smtp-server" by using the arrow keys to move the cursor to "smtp-server" and hitting carriage return.
  8. Set the "smtp-server" entry
    • {rcf.rhic.bnl.gov:465/user=username/ssl/novalidate-cert} where username is your Unix account name.
  9. Exit the Config menu by typing "e".
  10. Answer "Yes" to commit the changes.
  11. Go to the Setup menu by typing "s".
  12. Go to the CollectionLists menu by typing "l" (lower case "L").
  13. Add a new collection by typing "a".
  14. Give the new collection an identifiable nickname like "rcf" or "rcf.rhic.bnl.gov"
  15. Set the Server name
    • use {rcf.rhic.bnl.gov/user=username/ssl/novalidate-cert} where username is your Unix account name.
  16. You can leave the Path and View entries blank.
  17. Type "^X" (ctrl-X) to exit and save.
  18. Enter your email password when prompted. This is a special email password, not your Kerberos password.
  19. Answer "Y" to exit and save.
  20. Return to the main menu by typing "E".
  21. Quit pine by typing "Q"

You have now successfully configured pine to read mail on rcf.rhic.bnl.gov and to send mail through rcf.rhic.bnl.gov.

Note that when reading or sending mail for the first time during a pine session, you may be prompted for your password.
