How to log into and out of  RHIC X-term

What to do if  RHIC X-term freezes up

Dumping a window from the RHIC X-term into a GIF file

If you see an interesting thing in one of the windows on the RHIC X-term and you want to preserve it in the LOGBOOK, you need to do the following:

  1. type 'dumpwin' in an xterm window
  2. click in the title bar of  the window that you want to capture, this should raise the window to the front
  3. click  in the title bar AGAIN - you should now here a beep and another beep when the program is done capturing
  4. the program will write out a GIF with the date and time in the name (it prints out the exact name of the GIF)
  5. ftp to phobos-srv as phobos in binary mode.
  6. go to log computer, ftp [get] file from phobos-srv.
  7. import file into log

Pages available with Right Mouse Click

(standard plots listed on menu before first separator)

Lumi Scaler (pet)

This page displays the 16 scaler channels (1 line for each scaler) sent to RHIC from Phobos.

ZCAL HV (pet)

This page gives control and status of voltage on the zero degree calorimeters.

For more details, goto ZCAL HV(pet) page on RHIC X-term

Magnet Monitor (emc)

This page gives read only access to the PHOBOS magnet power supply.  No password is required to start.

For more details, go to Magnet documentation

BYMainDipoles & PhobosMagnet

This plot shows the ring main dipole buss magnet currents as a function of time.  Ensure autoscale is on, so see full range on display (goto setting menu)

BeamIons (Gpm)

This plot shows the number of ions in each ring as a function of time.
The vertical lines mark the beginning of the ramping period and when the beams go through transition and other ramp "step-stones".

All Exp. Zcal Coinc. (Gpm)

This page is a GPM (General Purpose Monitor) page that displays the ZDC coincidence rates reported to RHIC by the 4 experiments.

Phobos Triggers (Gpm)

This page is a GPM (General Purpose Monitor) page that displays selected RHIC scalers of our paddle triggers

Phobos Background (Gpm)

This displays the background at Phobos in various detectors. A value of about 100 in the Paddles and much less in the other detectors is normal.

IR10 Vacuum (Gpm)

This page displays the vacuum pressure (Torr) in our beam pipe. About 5X10^-10 is normal. Excursions up to a few times 10^-8 or more occur at the beginning of some stores. This is (presumably) the outgassing caused by the multi-packing electrons.

Other menu items to be documented.

Beam Synch

This page shows the parameters of the RHIC crossing clock (delays) + bunch fill patterns as configured for Phobos.

For more details goto Beam Synch page on RHIC X-term

Event Link

The event link page gives us access to the module, which we program, that interprets a CODE from RHIC (i.e. now running stabely code, about to use scrappers code) and outputs a logic pulse that we can use to turn on/off our system. (This module allows us to get info from RHIC selectively)

Magnet Control (emc)

This page controls the PHOBOS magnet power supply.

For more details, go to Magnet documentation

CheckList Instructions

Check that no duplicate processes are running on the RHIC x-term as shown by identical icons (.e.g.  HV).

Check that displays of RHIC beam, magnets and scalers are updating.  If not, close window and restart from menu.  If trouble persists, call MCR and they will consult, as necessary, with Controls support.
