This is a reminder to the RCF user community that starting tomorrow, Friday, 12/17/98, 5:30 PM, user access to RCF machines will be cut-off and all user processes killed in order to allow RCF staff to work on upgrading the storage of the NFS and AFS servers. The main goal of this upgrade is to move the current JBOD storage to RAID-only configurations. The work is expected to be completed by Sunday, 12/19/98, sometime in the afternoon. Provided that no major problems will be encountered during this upgrade, it is possible that work could be completed as early as Saturday evening.

Please be advised that users at remote sites working on AFS clients will be less affected. AFS access from remote sites will be possible all the time, except for a short period of time on Saturday morning (around 2 hours) when the servers will have to be taken down.

RCF's web server is expected to remain up and running for most of the time, except for a couple of hours during either Saturday, Dec 19, or Sunday, Dec 20. Given the reduced downtime of the afs servers and the caching features of afs, web docs stored in afs will enjoy greater availability.

Users must be aware that any data currently stored in the scratch areas will be lost. Please copy to your home directories or other backed-up directories anything useful that's currently stored in the scratch areas.

Users could help with speeding up the entire operation by deleting any unnecessary data from their home directories and/or other work areas, thus minimizing the time allocated to backup/restore operations. RCF staff will greatly appreciate your help in this matter.

If you have any questions regarding this upgrade please contact Edward Nicolescu at 344-2072.
