    Some histric remarks may be in order here -
    lots of code was developed a long time ago where one was in general assured
    that variables were static (you did not have to use SAVE ) and initialized
    to (zero)
    It is thus not the VAX-Fortran that was noy compliant since the zeroing is
    an extra feature
    but the programs them-selves.
