Shift Instructions
Contents
Data-taking instructions are here.
The console area is to be kept clear of all but shift personnel and necessary
"experts" during regular shifts.
- At the start of shift come 10 minutes early to talk to previous shift crew.
- At the start of shift read comments from the logbook for the last 24 hrs.
- Read the daily schedule, and what to do on next access pages.
- Read "Emergency First Response" posted on shelves just to the left of the
logbook computer, if you have already not done so.
- Take data during entire shift if possible! Write beam momentum as seen on RHIC video for
both beams at beginning of run in run logbook. We are looking for latch-ups as well as
collisions. This can be done even if beam unstable.
- If the conditions in RHIC change, stop and start a new run and note this in the logbook.
- The checklist is to be performed every 2 hours (click the following to see how to perform checklist). When you have
finished the checklist, write in the logbook that you have completed it, and write any
associated appropriate comments. If you find the documentation/checklist unclear etc email
the appropriate person with your comments, and ensure it gets taken care of.
- On the checklist page there is a time option, entitled "Regular". Look at this
page to determine what needs to be done regularly on shift (i.e. every few minutes)
- At the end of shift write any appropriate comments in logbook.
Regular Activities during shift and Things To Pay Attention To
- Every hour, write down the beam rate per minute, and record this
in the logbook.
- Monitor gamma of beam. Record yellow and blue beam energy at
start of each run in the Run Logbook (not shift logbook). Keep the crossing clock time
constant set for current RHIC beam energy.
- Determine whether a Fastbus pedestal run is required, and if required, collect
Fastbus pedestals and and analyze them. Pedestal runs need to be taken on a daily
basis. To determine when the last calibration run was taken, select "Complete
Run Logbook" from the portal and determine when the date of the last Fastbus pedestal
run (FBPED). The calibration runs can only be carried out between stable beam
running conditions. Calibrations runs collected while beams are present can not be
used to determine pedestals. Pedestal data can be collected easily by setting the
run type to FBPED (for
instructions click here). The pedestal data can be analyzed immediately (for
instructions click here).
- If there is no beam in the area, please read the documentation and write to the author
requesting the improvements you desire.
- Ensure you are aware of what RHIC is doing, and if they are working on something new ,
write a comment in logbook. (Note: RHIC video is not always up to date)
