    Ah, for which there's good reason mind you.  Sometimes people want odd
    compilers (need I mention 'GCC 2.96'?), and other odd stuff.  Much
    better for people to consciously choose what they want, by for example
    setting a variable just before doing ./configure, rather than doing
    too complicated stuff that will eventually break since it tries to do
    too much (sounds like an OOP advocate doesn't it?).
