Subject: To Dr. Wesselborg, concerning. manuscript LQ9030 Arsene et al.

Dear Dr. Wesselborg,

We have received your message regarding the status of manuscript

LQ9030
Evolution of the nuclear modification factors with rapidity and
centrality in ${d}$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{ {NN} }$=200 GeV
By: I. Arsene, I.G. Bearden, D. Beavis et al.

which was submitted by Dr. R. Debbe on behalf of the BRAHMS collaboration to PRL almost exactly 2 months ago. Your message informs us that the manuscript has not yet been refereed.

I shall not hide that the BRAHMS collaboration is very concerned about this and finds the situation highly unsatisfactory.

As you undoubtedly are aware, this paper presents new information that is highly timely and of very significant current interest in the field of ultrarelativistic heavy ions. The development of these results is in direct competition with several other experiments. Our results have the potential of being the first experimental publication from ultra relativistic heavy ion collisions bearing on the issue of the existence of the Color Glass Condensate.

It is therefore highly disturbing that the BRAHMS results have been eliminated from publication access for such a lenghty period, allowing at the same time scientific competitors the opportunity of publishing in competing journals. We strongly feel that the current situation raises serious ethical concerns regarding the peer review process, concerns that we think the stature of PRL should not invite.

I hope that Physical Review Letters, in view of the present situation, and the very significant and unfortunate delay already incurred, will do its utmost to achieve a particularly rapid referreeing of this important article.

with my best regards
Jens Jørgen Gaardhøje
dep. spokesperson BRAHMS collaboration.
