SPY) news channel ======== (1) Apr. 6-8 for the 3 day Jet Target installation The gold-gold run ends and the polarized-proton run starts on Apr. 2, 2004 at 08:00 (in the morning). This does NOT mean that the 3 day Jet Target installation day starts on Apr. 2, 2004 ! I didn't say when we would start the 3 day installation period in my last email as the situation was not very clear. Now, it's a bit clearer. Mei Bai et. al. will run the RHIC with polarized-protons for the first 4 days (from Apr. 2) WITHOUT the Jet Target. The Jet Target is planned to be installed during the 3 day period, from Apr. 6 (Tuesday) to Apr. 8 (Thursday); and actually many other works such as those of the RF cavities will be done during these 3 days. During these 3 days, there may be ( I said "may be" !) an 8 hour period for an AGS access which is driven by the works related to the CNI polarimeter in the AGS. The polarimeter group has not finally decided and they'll re-evaluate about one week before Apr. 6. Booster needs to be run and can't be shut down during the above 3 day period as the NSRL (NASA) program needs Booster ! There is a LIPA test which needs to be done during one of the above 3 days. People are trying to figure out how to run the Booster and (if necessary) AGS at the same time of this ~12 hour LIPA test. I understand that we may switch Booster to the "preferred feed" from the nominal "alternate feed". ******************* ******************** ********************** (2) 63 GeV ? 63 GeV (in 2 significant digits) is the Center-Of-Mass energy for the coming lower energy gold-gold run starting from Apr. 2, 2004 and the Beam Energy is half of that. Slightly more precise if you like, the exact value we use for the center-of-mass energy is 62.8 GeV and the beam energy is 62.8/2 = 31.4 GeV. ******************* ******************** ********************** (3) NSRL (NASA) schedule maneuver Since we need to fix a switch in the 3L sub-station on Mar. 17, 2004 and the Booster will be off, NSRL program will have to stop for ~a day. Yesterday (Thursday) morning, when I thought about the lower energy run schedule, I realized that since we need to dedicate 2-3 days (starting from Mar. 24) for the machine development for the lower energy run, we can't practically run the NSRL experiments during those 3 days. Because NSRL by that time will want to have the Fe ion beams and delivering Fe ion beams to NSRL cannot co-exist with the injection to RHIC. During the machine development period, there is no considerable period of RHIC stores (during which there is no RHIC injection) but just injection followed by injection most of the time. I immediately inform the run-coordinators for the RHIC & NSRL and other people about this news --- I hope they could tell me that I was wrong but unfortunately I was right this time. So now, the plan is that NSRL experiments will be shifted to be done during the weekend. ******************* ******************** ********************** (4) Other brief status (as I see it) ... probably still alive after May 7: --- We've had a tough afternoon that the main ramping power supply for the RHIC yellow ring keeps pulling the quench link (which prevents us from running). Experts are trying to cure this problem at the time of writing. --- Independently, it seems that we have got a working mode with pulses of gold ions (from the MP7 Tandem) and a pulse of silicon ions (from the MP6 Tandem). This way, both the RHIC and NSRL operation can co-exist (even during RHIC injection). This mode is only possible for silicon and carbon ions during the RHIC gold operation. --- Also, the polarized-proton run setup operation in the AGS continues. --- Conflicts with different programs become more apparent. But as usual, we are doing our best to cope with each other. Well, I predict that I'll still be alive after May 7, 2004 when the RHIC gold-gold run, polarized-proton run and the NSRL run all finish according to our present schedule. Life just goes on ............... ******************* ******************** ********************** (5) As usual, the next Time meeting is next Tuesday (Mar. 16, 2004) at 13:30 in the Snyder Seminar Room. ====== ======= ====== ======= ====== ======= ====== ======= This SPY news channel solicits YOUR input of any sorts.
