Subject: SPY news update: What to worry ... Time meeting Tuesday (Mar. 9)

====== Scheduling Physicist -YIP (ie. SPY) news channel ========

Disclaimer: Whatever is being said here is not always 100% accurate
though I try my best to avoid being 100% inaccurate :-)

=================================================================

(1) Clarification :

Sorry for another unintentional offence of mine, I understand everybody
has been working hard overtime and overnight to cope with the tight
schedule. I was told that the electronics for the polarimeter --- which I
mentioned in my last email --- were essentially ready the night before
the AGS access but people just did some additional work
(check/modification) a few hours before the access when they saw
that they had one hour or two that they could use.

(2) Do you know ?

I was shown a plot : when our magnets in the RHIC ring ramp up
and down, transient changes in the RHIC ring in the neighborhood of
0.02 - 0.03 K may be induced. This actually could trip the DX magnet
(the magnet closest to the Interaction Region of the experiments)
temperature alarms.

    ***********************************************************

(3) What is to worry about ...

Tandems have been "acting up" the last 3 days and both Tandems are
not 100% healthy recently. The Tandem MP7 has been sparking
for the last 3 days --- hopefully the place will be cooled down by the A/C
and increasing the tank pressure may help suppress the sparking. For
the MP6, the driver motor for the chain (which transported the charges)
seems to have a problem --- the gas in the MP6 is being pumped out
and people will go in to fix it in the weekend. Hopefully, on Monday
or so, MP6 will be ready for the NSRL (NASA) setup.

NSRL is set to start on Mar. 15 and we need both Tandems (one for the
RHIC operation and one for the NSRL operation) to function well.

    ***********************************************************

(4) A couple other point about our status :

** Today, when we turn on the NEW warm snake in the AGS to its full
current ~2700 A, the proton beam disappears. So now, we increase
the current step by step (at the time of writing, 600 A) and do all the
necessary corrections for the beam to survive.

** Whether we will get back one more week of the gold-gold run is
still not finalized at the time of writing.

    ***********************************************************

(5) The usual Time meeting will happen again on Mar. 9, 2004 (Tuesday)
in the Snyder Room (911A) at 13:30.
