Dear Collaborator, As you are well aware there has been considerable uncertainty about this years run. This has not ended, both due to technical an political reasons. It has been decided that the present d-Au run (at least ) extends into Monday 24 at 8.00. The assumption is the this will be the start of the turn-over to pp running, and this is now the position of STAR an Phenix. Our public position has been to complete the d-Au run this year. With the recent improvement there is a reasonable possibility our planned program i.e. completion of the 4 deg., the 12 deg high pt measurements , and higher pt for MRS can be completed in this time frame. The one technical issue is that it has to be demonstrated that the p polarization in AGS has reached about 40% to start the pp program. Progress is being made but is not there yet. A more serious issue is that the FY2003 budget approved by congress, and then digested by DOE does NOT give RHIC sufficient funds for running through May. A meeting between Doe and BNL is scheduled for early next week to attempt to secure funding for completing this years run as planned. As soon I know something more specific I will keep you informed.
