FYI from the substitute schedl. phys., who is good enough to inform us all more than the regular guy. Flemming " Hey, between Monday evening and the beginning of the Beam Experiments last night at 9pm we had one more long store (and a bunch of PS problems) with again high luminosities (peaked 4*10^28 cm^-2 s^-1 @ PHENIX, about 50-75% STAR/BRAHMS, 40% at PHOBOS with 4m beta*). The intensities (110 bunches) were kept below about 50*10^9 (Au) and 50*10^11 (d) respectively to reduce backgrounds. d bunch merging was not used. Beam experiments had 9 h (out of 12 scheduled) with beam and could do most of the attempted measurements :). The 3 hours were lost to an ice/freezing problem out at 2 o'clock (well, doesn't sound too surprising to me considering last nights temperatures ;)). The scheduled maintenance started this morning with a delay of about 30 min.. By now the sweeping process started. The installation of the PHENIX shielding (south side) is finished :). However, an additional 1/2 day or so will be needed to install the north side (the date is not decided yet). Once we come back on tonight we'll go into some hours of development to setup high luminosity collisions with 55 bunches per ring and maximized bunch intensity. A ramp earlier this morning during the studies confirmed that there was no vacuum rise in IR10 (PHOBOS) as seen in the earlier ramps with high intensity and 110 bunches although the total beam intensity was the same. We will also continue working on the difference in the individual luminosities. Have a productive night ;), Angelika " -- Flemming Videbaek Brookhaven National Laboratory Physics Department tlf 631-344-4106 fax 631-344-1334 e-mail: videbaek@bnl.gov
