RUN-3 Dear Collaborator, I have sent to the Institutions the first response from the PAC meeting in regard to next and the following years running. To ensure that all are aware of the status let me summarize. The PAC recommended and T.Kirk concurred that the RUN-3 starting in Dec/Jan will be 11 weeks of d-Au physics running i.e. 2+3 weeks startup and 11 weeks of physics, of which the last week in fact is set aside for Au in yellow ring only background studies, followed by 5+3 weeks of pp running. This is unfortunately our request, but a long Au run is scheduled for Run-4 i.e. staring in November 2004. The run-plan is indeed very close to that proposed by PHENIX. This plan does imply that we have to intensify the preparations for running d-Au and pp in the coming run. This is not a trivial matter, as have been discovered through initial discussion at BNL. The issues at hand is having an efficient level-0 trigger, a good vertex determination as well as timing starts for the two spectrometers. Thus one objective in the near term is to finalize this as well as other preparation for the upcoming run. The construction of the Cherenkov detector for the MRS is proceeding well at Kansas; the schedule is tight for having it installed by Dec. 1, but the aim and hope is to have it done by then. With a startup of d-Au is it unfortunately not very predictable when actual physics data-taking can start. The CA-D clearly will commission beam from Dec 1- Dec 15 following the cool-down, but if at this time serious detector commissioning can take place is un-clear.
