Dear Collaborator, Let me use this mailing first to wish you all the best for the New Year both in our science endeavour and in your personal life. I will also remind you about the collaboration meeting at BNL January 28-30, immediately following the end of the pp run. A detailed agenda has not been made yet. The main issues to discuss though are -- assessment of and expected results from the AuAu and pp running -- Planning for analysis -- Discussion i.e. specifics for repairs, improvements to existing experiment. -- Presentation of additions to the experiment for the next HI run (Cherenkov's MRS, Photons,.. At this point plans need to be specific and not general ideas, the timescale is about 9 month for the next run. The pp running is slowly getting on its way. The machines have had its share of problems, the holidays, and the very thin coverage with shifters is making it difficult for us to get started on the systematic physics program. The good news is that the physics program to obtain comparison spectra for pp (at least at lower pt) seem quite feasible with the two triggers implemented for the FS and MRS. There are a couple of open questions a) how good is the start time resolution in both arms. b) How efficient is the trigger i.e. does it pick up most of tracks it should. The first issue requires analysis. The second also that we collect a sufficient large sample of min bias triggers The sample has to be large at the present settings 90 deg and 8 deg there is about one reconstructed track per 500 to 2000 min bias events. The inclusion of the full FS has also been delayed due to first some fastbus problems and now the HV mainframe voltage failure which we attempt to fix today (access this afternoon). The immediate program is for the 90 deg MRS program (2A/B and possible 4A/B before moving MRS (requires access), and for FS the 8 and 12 deg lower settings. (at the 4 and 3 deg it is most likely necessary to move some of the Inel ring modules out of the way. best regards Flemming ------------------------------------------------------ Flemming Videbaek Physics Department Brookhaven National Laboratory tlf: 631-344-4106 fax 631-344-1334 e-mail: videbaek@bnl.gov
