It took a while for ITD to discover this way of securing viruses was
    exceedinly harmful to outside users;
At least this is a step forward in regards to IMAP and POP.

    > The Information Technology Division (ITD) has restored POP and IMAP
    > e-mail services to the Laboratory because of the adverse impact this
    > limitation has on BNL visitors and guests, and because of the fact
    > that the Nimba virus has been cleaned up internally. ITD asks all
    > employees to be diligent in checking their e-mail for viruses and to
    > educate themselves about the risks associated with this malicious
    > code.
    >
    > The Nimba virus is still being deflected from BNL's perimeter
    > firewall in very large numbers, so ITD continues to monitor it
    > closely. Many viruses enter the Lab through these connections
    > because ITD cannot filter these e-mails for viruses. The division
    > does filter all e-mail coming into the BNL Domain through the
    > firewall and has installed anti-virus protection on all ITD e-mail
    > servers. ITD has already seen the Nimba virus re-enter the Lab since
    > these services were restored; so again, ITD asks every user to help
    > keep BNL's networks clean and workstations updated.
    >
    > ITD will look for alternative ways to handle POP and IMAP mail over
    > the next few months by talking with software suppliers, other labs,
    > and government security personnel to learn how to minimize the risks
    > associated with this traffic.
