It is not obvious that it has to do with the D1 since it is behind the Beam-beam counters which has directionality build in. It is a good idea to check it out with either the 8 or 12 degree run. We are looking in detail into how the simulations can underpredict the background. With FS on/off the corrections to be applied to the raw dN/deta changes about .67->.65 i.e. 0.02; This is similar to what is observed when the beam pipe is made thicker. For this point the effect is small, but alas simulations are most likely to underpredict background.
