Folks, the jinxed pii10.hirg.bnl.gov computer is now running the brand new, fresh-off-the-presses, RedHat 7.0, linux kernel 2.2.16. The most notable differences from redhat 6.2 are: - gcc-2.96 compilers (note: the is no such thing as GCC 2.96, at least according to gcc.gnu.org. Aparently redhat took the current GCC development snapshot and called it gcc 2.96). - Xfree86 4.0.1 - updated (and much improved, at least visually) GNOME. The usual suspects (/afs and printers) are currently missing, but the user disks and accounts are available, so everybody is welcome to try to login and kick the tires. The decision to install RedHat 7.0 was made after the (also brand new) RedHat 6.2 installation stopped seeing the network card. It was deemed to be less work to do a fresh install of 7.0 than to try and figure out why RedHat 6.2 suddenly stopped working. -- Konstantin Olchanski Physics Department, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York olchansk@bnl.gov
