    } Summary of the ZDC group meeting Sept 21 2000
    }         =============================================
    }                                   Michael Murray
    }
    }The meeting was very well attended (~20)
    }with half those present being
    }students. Angelika Dreees opened by saying that RHIC was very
    }pleased with the ZDC and would like us to change nothing.
    }Unfortunately this may not be possible, see below.
    }
    }
    }1) Luminosity and Cross-Sections
    }Anelika Drees and Z. Xu have made first estimates of
    }the cross section using a few vernier scans done in STAR.
    }They would like to have bunch by bunch scalers if this is
    }available from BRAHMS.
    }
    }2) Linearity:
    } This year the ZDCs were linear over almost the complete range.
    }Next year we will need to expand this range by a factor of 2 to
    }accommodate greater energy, more neutrons hitting the ZDC and
    }increased fraction of electromagnetic energy deposition at 100GeV.
    }This should be possible by lowering the HV but this may be a problem
    } for thresholds. We may need to install better cables. I
    }am not sure if we are terminating the 2nd output of the BRAHMS
    }ZDC PMTs. If so, then removing this termination should increase
    }the signal we see by a factor of 2.
    }
    }3) Rate effects:
    }These are under study. We suffered some periods of bad vacuum.
    }RHIC is more aware of the
    }need to bake out the warm sections of pipe before our IR.
    }I have asked Angelika if we can have radiation monitoring on a
    }fortnightly or monthly basis.
    }
    }4) Electronics:
    }Edmundo Garcia has built 8 splitters/sumers that will be used
    }by all the experiments. He will build 2 spares. Angelika would like
    }to know when the ZDC HV modules failed. She is trying to track down
    }the cause.
