    Hi Flemming et al,

I think it's a splendid idea. MySQL has matured a lot lately
(transactions, etc.), so we'd probably get a more stable server
(though I can't remember having trouble with the MySQL server at all
    :-)

If RCF is willing to do the conversion to the new format, or at least
give us clear and concise instructions, then I'm happy.

Come to think of it, I think RCF _has_ to do it for us, as the
database is located in system directories (/var/lib/mysql or
    something).

I don't know the specifics, but I would guess that the MySQL server is
backward compatible with the clients. However, if that's not the
case, we probably only need to upgrade the client libraries, recompile
ROOT and BRAT, and we're done.

Oh, just remembered we have our own MySQL server for the run and
conditions database. Hmm. Perhaps we should upgrade that too.
Presumably it's simple. My guess is, that MySQL has some instructions
on their web-page for the transition process.

This message puts it on brahms-dev-l :-)

Really old Red Hat - let's kill that beast :-)

For this machine, it might actually be a good idea to use the 2.6
kernel when it's released. The new kernel threads means much better
threads, and as the MySQL server is aggressively threaded, it could
probably benefit a lot from that.

    So I guess it's a simple procedure.

Well, that's usually how things work in the FLOSS
(Free/Libre/OpenSource Software) world, but not necessarily true in
the proprietary world (think of Win95 -> Win98 - jikes).

Yes, before the run, so that we can test it a bit. Perhaps we should
set up a test database server first?

Another possibility with the new MySQL server is to do replication.
We could exploit that by having to database host (the existing
brahms-db0 and an old rcas machine converted to brahms-db1), both
having the exact same databases via replication. In that way, we have
redundancy to deal with failures. Perhaps the replicating host should
be somewhere else than at BNL?

    Yours,
