So you may want to ask Betty to upgrade mysql on the pii's to a newer version?

Negative, negative. mysql works for me, this is what I get:

    [olchansk@pii4 olchansk]$ mysql -V
    mysql Ver 6.5 Distrib 3.20.32a, for pc-linux-gnu (i686)
    [olchansk@pii4 olchansk]$ which mysql
    /usr/bin/mysql
    [olchansk@pii4 olchansk]$

Maybe you are picking up the wrong mysql executable?
