Assembly and Test of Phobos Front-End Contoller Modules

Overview:

    This document describes the assembly step, installation and test procedure for phobos FECs

    The main steps are:

  1. Assembly of power board (PWB)
  2. Assembly of Signal board (SB)
  3. Preparation of Calibration boards (CalB)
  4. Assembly of PWB to Signal Board
  5. Entering the FEC configuration into the database
  6. Installation of FECs in crates
  7. Test of FEC voltages
  8. Test and analysis of FEC readout
  9. Port-per-Port Test with detector module connected to FEC
  10. Checking results of port-per-port test

Always work with bubble wrap under boards

Power must be off if you plug or unplug cables to FEC or detector!

Document what you do in online and paper logbook

Add any test results to the FEC Test Folder.

Never remove pages from the Test folder even if you redo measurements.

Assembly of power boards

  1. measure 8 fuses on power board for transmission
  2. check if latchup boards are installed and all wires connected
  3. set VBS jumpers to pins labelled "150V" on all 4 sockets

Assembly of signal boards

  1. install eprom CUnnn in socket and verify orientation
  2. install eprom Fnn.mm in socket and verify orientation
  3. set jumper on top pin on lower 40-pin connector on board rear edge

Preparation of Calibration boards

  1. Select four calibration boards and note serial numbers for port 0 to port 3
  2. check socket on signal board for good connectors (has to have gold insert)
  3. isolate back of cal board with kapton tape
  4. shorten pins on cal board by 2 mm
  5. plug cal boards in socket with the components facing you if the signal board front panel is on your left side
  6. bent calibration board backwards by about 50 degrees

Assemble power boards on signal boards

  1. remove 3 screws on SB backend from distant pieces
  2. replace too long screw from bottom connector (top screw) with short screw if necessary
  3. plug power board on signal board
  4. add 3 screws

Add FEC configuration to database and in logbook

  1. go to http://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/ASP/Computing/Connection_Maps/FEC_List.asp
  2. select FEC and follow instructions on page
  3. you need to change FEC id, PWB id, CU eprom, conFiguration eprom, set all Vbc values to 0, set all 4 calibration board ids, set number of channel per string for all strings
  4. update database
  5. verify values and click OK
  6. click refresh and verify values

Install FEC in crates

  1. before you start installing switch on FEC and VBS powers on Slow Control and measure +/- 6.0 and 3.3 V on rails
  2. DO NOT install if the voltages are not correct (+/- 0.1V tolerance on 6/3.3V and 1V on Vbc)
  3. SWITCH OFF power on slow control monitor and WAIT because the ramp down will take time
  4. plug in FEC and connect latchup connector (4 pins), power connector, DMU flat cable (ATTENTION on POLARITY!) and Glink connector
  5. Verify connector orientation and jumper settings

 

Test of FEC voltages on Front panel

  1. switch on power on slow control monitor by doing the following
  2. Login as : stringtester
  3. Passwd: 10o'clock
  4. Click on icon in middle page
  5. Run program by hitting arrow in top left hand corner of page
  6. Hit Green "On" button
  1. FOR EACH PORT REPEAT THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
  1. Connect HTB ("Helmut's Test Board") to the port
  2. Hit the set button, to ensure working ok, should see two red LEDs
  3. Send global Latch-up reset to crate: this is done by Hitting the reset button. Should see both LEDs go off
  4. Hit the set button again to get working again. Should see two red LEDs on.
  5. Measure and record voltages as given on FEC Test Sheet including Vbc.
    NOTE: Be very careful not to short the pins
  6. Test latchup on Vss and Vdd:
    Hit top (Vss) button, should see LEDs go out. Hit global reset button, and ensure see both LEDs light
    Hit bottom (Vdd) button, should see LEDs go out. Hit global reset button, and ensure see both LEDs light

 

Test readout of empty FEC

Once you have several FECs installed you can start testing the readout. Please ALWAYS talk to DAQ expert before you start

  1. Ask DAQ expert to verify FEC to DMU connection
  2. Changing configuration on Mercury:
    login to phobosx
    cd ~mercury
    xemacs settings.txt
    If you don't know how to change file get expert to do it!
  3. Enable the FEC in readout configuration file at http://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/ASP/Computing/Connection_Maps/FEC_List.asp
    Follow instructions: Remember to refresh when change
  4. change the state to ON and write to data base
  5. check cable connection configuration at http://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/ASP/Computing/Connection_Maps/FEC_Configuration_All.asp
  6. generate configuration file at http://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/ASP/Computing/Connection_Maps/Create_Connection_Map_Form_Many.asp
  7. Take pedestal data.
  8. Run pedcalc.C in another window
    Fast way (connect to phonl1 as shift, cd pedgaincalc, and type phat "pedcalc.C(RunNumber)", ensure data file is in /data/1)
    old way (i.e. in /export/home/phobos/phatdaq, type phat <ENTER> then .x pedcalc.C(RunNumber) <ENTER> <ENTER>)
  9. While pedcalc.C running take calibration data.
  10. When calibration data finished run calcalc.C in another window.
    Fast way (connect to phonl1 as shift, cd pedgaincalc, and type phat "calcalc.C(RunNumber)", ensure data file is in /data/1)
    (i.e. in /export/home/phobos/phatdaq, type phat <ENTER> then .x calcalc.C(RunNumber) <ENTER> <ENTER>)
  11. When calcalc.C and pedcalc.C finshed proceed.
  12. Analyse runs and check that all FEC are present in data, the base noise should be around 0.7 ADC counts

Port-per-Port Test

    The aim of the port-per-port test is to verify the function of each FEc port with an actual detector module conneted.

  1. Switch OFF all power before connecting the module on the test port
  2. configure module connection map at http://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/ASP/Computing/Connection_Maps/FEC_Configuration_All.asp . Our test module is normally GSNN1
  3. generate configuration file at http://www.bnl.gov/phobos/Detectors/ASP/Computing/Connection_Maps/Create_Connection_Map_Form_Many.asp
  4. enable Vbc on the front panel. The test module should be operated with 60V Vbc
  5. Take pedestal and calibration run (see 7-11 above)
  6. analyse runs and check the following things for each string on the online monitor:

Checking results of FEC port-per-port tests

  1. the detector shows up at the right FEC port in the data.
  2. pedestal is there for the first 384 channels on even and odd string for this port
  3. the noise without common mode correction (3rd plot) is about 2.5 ADC, the noise with CMC (2nd plot) is about 2.0.
  4. The noise for channels 385 and higher should be around 0.7
  5. The gain for channel 1 to 384 should be between 0.8 and 0.9 with a clear pattern of 6 64-channel chips
  6. The monitoring values should show the defaults as given in the FEC configuration
  7. Print out the monitor test page and add it to the FEC Test sheet

Analyzing FEC test data

This document is a guide to how to look at the results from the FEC tests run in Oct -Dec99

Proceedure  for taking and analyzing data:

  1. Connect refernce module to port                                             1 minute
  2. Write ped data file                                                                   1 minute
  3. Start pedcalc.C                                                                        <5 minutes
  4. In parallel with (3) start calibration run data taking                     7 minutes
  5. Run Calcalc.C                                                                          3-14 minutes (depending on #modules connected)
  6. When 5 and 3 finished (~3 minutes after gain file made) start ped run
  7. Use online to display results etc..                                                 2 minutes

 

Proceedure for analyzing data offline.

  1. Identify the run numbers of pedestal and gain files you want to examine. (PedRunNumber,GainRunNumber)
  2. If not already done, run pedcalc.C and calcalc.C on each specific file on the online
  3. To analyse the file on the online, the following must be done.
  4. Goto the data directory on phobosx were data files are located
  5. Copy the pedestal files of interest to the online, by typing:
        scp PhoRaw<PedRunNumber>s000.root online@phonl1.chm.bnl.gov:/home/online/data/testfiles <ENTER>
  6. When copy complete, goto online machine, and goto the following directory: /home/online/gui/src
  7. Start the online, ensuring it will load the correct ped and gain files, by typing:
        phat 'test.C(<GainRunNumber>)'  <ENTER>
    (NB: this assumes that the pedestal run was taken just before the calibration run)
  8. Open Pedestal data file:
            Goto  DATA menu, choose FILE
            Goto  FILE menu, choose OPEN
            Double click on testfiles
            Open pedestal file, PhoRaw<PedRunNumber>s000.root (by OPEN button or double clicking on filename)
  9. Goto Histogram selector window, choose
            [Slicon String]
            [FEC Number]
            [String Number]
            [FEC test]
  10. Hit "Next Event" button, and view display.
  11. To print, goto FILE menu, and select PRINT option.  (Page will be printed on color printer)
  12. To save all histograms in a root file, goto FILE, and select SAVE AS ROOT. The file will be save in the /home/shift/fectesthisto directory as FEC#_string#_Init_Run#.root
  13. Choose another FEC or String, and repeat Steps 10 , 11 and 12. NB: Once a combination has been dealt with, one cannot go back without restarting the program.
  14. To exit, goto FILE menu and select QUIT.

Running pedcalc and calcalc on phonl1(online machine)

  1. Login as "shift" and open a window on phonl1
  2. Type:
            cd pedgaincalc <ENTER>
  3. To run pedcalc, ensure data file is in /data/1 on DAQ machine, then type
            phat "pedcalc.C(<RunNumber>)"
  4. To run calcalc, ensure data file is in /data/1 on DAQ machine, then type
            phat "calcalc.C(<RunNumber>)"
  5. If problems, try again, if still fails  report to Nigel (x5933, nigel@kiwi.chm.bnl.gov)
  6. The files should be automatically sent to the data base, ready for use.
