Oracle Advanced Networking Option
for Windows NT and Windows 95/98

Release Notes

Release 8.0.5

15 September 1998

A66616-02

These Release Notes document important last-minute information not included in the Advanced Networking Option for Windows NT and Windows 95/98 documentation set. See your database and client release notes for other last-minute Oracle8 product information.

Topics include:

CyberSAFE and Kerberos Authentication Adapters

  • If you are using Kerberos, you should create the directory \TMP on the drive where Oracle products are installed.
  • If you use Net8 Assistant to generate the configuration file SQLNET.ORA, some parameters might not be saved properly. Consult Oracle Advanced Networking Administrator's Guide, and edit your configuration file manually.
  • The Net8 Getting Started for Windows NT and Windows 95 says CyberSafe Application Security Toolkit version 1.0.4a is required for the CyberSAFE Authentication Adapter. CyberSAFE Adapter is now qualified with the Toolkit version 1.1. You must also install CyberSAFE Challenger Client version 5.2.7.3. See the Oracle Advanced Networking Option Installation for Windows NT and Windows 95 for this and other required software and their versions.

DCE Integration

  • PC-DCE version 2.2 is supported.
  • DCE Integration for external roles is not working in this release.
  • Java-Enabled Browser Restriction

You must have a Java-enabled browser to view online HTML documentation. These browsers include:

    • Netscape Navigator version 3.0 or later
    • Internet Explorer version 3.0 or later

If you do not use these browsers, you cannot view documentation from the WELCOME.HTM page that is accessed when you choose Start > Programs > Oracle for Windows NT - [HOME_NAME] > Oracle Documentation.

You can still view online documentation by going to \DOC\INDEX.HTM located at the top of your CD-ROM, or to ORACLE_HOME\DOC\INDEX.HTM if you installed the documentation onto your computer.

    Oracle8 on Windows 98

If you install Oracle8 products and then upgrade to Windows 98, some products will display a warning that they may not run correctly on Windows 98.

All of the products in this release have been tested on Windows 98, and they do indeed run on WIndows 98.

If you click on the Details button of this warning dialog box, a message appears telling you to call Oracle Support. Calling Support is not necessary; just click on the "Don't display this message" box. The message will no longer appear.

    Java Runtime Environment

The Java Runtime Environment included with our release (1.1.1) is not officially certified on Windows 98 by Sun Microsystems (it will be supported in a later release). Some of our products depend on JRE. While this JRE is not officially supported on Windows 98 our testing has not uncovered problems with the use of the above products.
