Hi, Ian,

The "presence" of global orbital angular momentum in non-central AuAu 
collisions
at RHIC is based on an assumption that "a partonic _system_ is formed 
immediately after
the initial collision, interactions among the produced partons will lead 
to the formation
of QGP with both transverse and longitudinal collective motion".
As Flemming pointed out, estimating a global angular momentum is not a 
trivial
matter.     See nucl-th/0705.2852 and references  therein for some 
discussions  on the
issue.
