Subject: new BERT release Monday

I wanted to issue a "heads-up" that we will be releasing a new version of
the BERT application on Monday. This will require that the experiments
restart their applications to pick up the new revision. Controls or MCR
personnel will be in contact with the shift leaders on Monday to facilitate
this.

The revision primarily involves a change in semantics regarding the way the
dump voting takes place; it was designed to more accurately follow the
arrangements made this run, as well as being more flexible in extenuating
circumstances. MCR still specifies a specific dump time and experiments are
expected to plan appropriately to be prepared for the abort kickers to fire
at that time, whether they require 3 or 30 minutes to secure equipment, stop
data runs, etc. (we still issue the "15 minutes to go" reminder). It should
now also help facilitate dialog in the extenuating circumstances where
experiments wish to continue running or end a store early.

We expect it to work as follows:
-When refilling, the experiments' votes are initially set to an "Undeclared"
(gray) state. Note that if an experiment is not currently running and needs
no warning for beam dumps, they can vote "Don't Care", which is not reset
every ramp.

-After MCR establishes a store and declares physics on/sets a dump time,
experiments can declare if they wish to dump earlier than planned - "Request
Dump" (yellow) - or "Extend Store" (green) beyond the specified dump time;
or take no action if the set time is acceptable. One can change votes if
needed.

-15 minutes prior to dumping, MCR will remind the experiments to "Prepare to
Dump" - a red popup window that makes some extra noise if your speakers are
on. You now have a choice of responses - "Preparing to Dump" (orange),
"Ready to Dump" (red), or "Extend Store" (green). One can also change the
vote to any of these 3 afterwards.

-If the agreement is made to extend the store, MCR can reset the votes to
"Undeclared" and set a new dump time.

Obviously not all situations can be covered, and there will be times when
phone calls will be necessary, but hopefully this will help facilitate
dialog and reduce the occurrences at the end of the store where confusion
arises and/or action is taken before a consensus is achieved.

The other notable feature is that the latest polarization reading will be
displayed in the status (during polarized proton runs); moving the mouse
over the number will show a "tooltip" with the date and time of the
measurement.

We hope that this will help our efforts to give the users a more informed
view of Operations. Please let me know if there are any problems.

Regards,
Greg Marr
