***********************************************************************************************

(1) There will be a Time Meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, May 17, 2005) at 1:30 pm in the
Snyder room.

If you don't know, the "RHIC machine expt. meeting" has now moved to be after the Time
Meeting. Among other things, the RHIC expt. and machine coordinators don't need to show
their transparencies twice as everybody has learnt about it during the Time Meeting.

(2) 4 hour Maintenance this Wed. (May 18, 2005)

Due to the necessity to fix the smoke alarm problem at 2 o'clock (which I'll explain below), we'll
have a 4 hour maintenance day this Wed. from 08:00 (morning to 12:00 (noon). The usual thing
would happen (such as AGS being opened first etc.). There will be delta_T to sweep the RHIC
ring and experiments and AGS etc. after 12:00 (noon). { delta_T is always there no matter
how long/short the official maintenance period is ! }

There is no planned maintenance for next week, at this time !

***********************************************************************************************

(3) Why "down time" help ?

The RHIC beam was aborted due to smoke alarms in 2 o'clock around 6 pm Sat. (May 14, 2005).
After ~1 hour, ie. ~7 pm, people couldn't discover any fire/smoke nor locate the faulty detector.
Then, they start the OPM 3.24 procedure which would allow us to have 80 hours of beam operation.

A simple arithmetic calculation would show that the above period ends at ~3 am this Wed.
morning. So, this doesn't fit in our nominal/optimal maintenance time ~8 am on Wed.
It's optimal because the experiment specialists have bought air tickets to come
here etc. etc.

As "experienced" as I am when I was told of this problem, I went to our "safety guru"
as I know he always has a solution for me. It was pointed out that this is 80 hours
of operation, not including any "down time". I immediately went to our "operation
guru" and verified that we at least had 10 hours of "down time" after 7 pm Sat. So
the 80 hours without "down time" takes us well after 8 am on Wed. and that's why
we can deal with the smoke alarm in our nominal Wed. maintenance schedule.

This is one of the rare occassions that "down time" does help :-)

(4) Performance

I've learnt since yesterday that we seem to be closer to our goal of the figure of merit,
which is luminosity * (polarization)^4 --- polarization to the 4th power, than the
luminosity per se. This is because our polarization now (>50%) seems to be higher
than our expected (40-45%) as I was told by the experiments.

***********************************************************************************************

(5) a few words about the Accelerator Physics Experiment schedule

There is no accelerator physics experiment (or formerly known as beam experiment)
today as most accelerator physicists are in Knoxville. But we'll have the accelerator
physics experiment next Monday (after May 23). The Monday after that is more
complicated and I don't even want to talk about it :-)
