As you can see some progress has been made, albeit some inconclusive opening too. It look slike the coolddonw can start the earliest next Wednesday. flemming ---------------------------------------------------------------- Flemming Videbaek Physics Department Brookhaven National Laboratory e-mail: videbaek@bnl.gov phone: 631-344-4106 ----- Original Message ----- From: Kin Yip To: kinyip@fnal.gov Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2004 8:37 PM Subject: A-SPY news: short found in Q3 at 12 o'clock ====== Acting Scheduling Physicist -YIP (ie. A-SPY) news channel ======== (0) 12 o'clock area (RHIC): George & Co. have found the short in the Q3 splice --- the new word that I learnt from Gary used ( Isn't splice == interconnect ??). Cleaning and preparation is being done and the repair will start tomorrow (Sunday!). The Blue ring at 12 o'clock was warmed up Friday afternoon and splice cutting apparently began soon after that. *********************************************************************************************** (1) 10 o'clock area (RHIC): 4 interconnects (between D6 and Q9) have been opened. But no obvious damage that might have led to the "short to ground" was found. The "short to ground" actually disappeared after the cryogenic warm-up. People have tried high-pot etc. to regenerate the "short" but it was probably not conclusively successful. From a couple sources, I understand that a un-used shunt was disconnected which may/could possibly get rid of the problem. Closing up the opened interconnects at 10 o'clock has begun and welding to close the Helium Bellows may start next Tue. or Wed. --- according to Gary Mcintyre. *********************************************************************************************** (2) A couple more pictures (not too useful actually) : I went to the 10 o'clock and 12 o'clock areas and took quite a few pictures. 2 of them were added to http://www.c-ad.bnl.gov/kinyip/SchedPhys/RHIC_shorts_2004/. Actually, I've been adding a few lines of news every now and then in the above webpage, as I said in my last email. I'm not absolutely sure how much you can really learn from those pictures. You probably need George or Gary et. al. to give you a lecture or something. Of course, I've carried my POM (personal oxygen monitor) and film badge with me when I went there to take pictures. There was nobody in both sites when I was there (~7:30 pm) in both places --- best time for picture taking ! ======= ====== ======= ======= ====== ======= ======= ====== ======= This A-SPY news channel solicits YOUR input of any sorts.
