about a week ago the exp were asked by t.Kirk, triggered by a CA-D request about the preferred specie for hI running; i responded that the BUP would request Fe i.e. an ion in the mass 60 range. subsequently he received responses from other exp. the result is decided , and given below. This has no implications, ie. it is still up to the PAC to decide on relative amount of hI vs pp, and if there should be a lower energy HI run in order of 1 week. This is by the way requested by the other experiments with Phobos asking for a week at 19.6 GeV too. Though the two big exp have yet to submit their proposals (see http://www.bnl.gov/henp/pac0904.asp for the submitted proposals and loi's) they both ask for 10 wks LI and 10 wks pp, with the twist of Phenix, thanks to tannenbaum asking for 1 week of 62.4 gev proton running. flemming . August 4, 2004 Colleagues: In response to the July 26, 2004 email from Thomas Roser requesting an early decision on the ion species to be used in the FY05 heavy ion running, I have investigated the requests of the four RHIC experiments that will take data in the FY05 run. After discussing the issue with the spokespersons, individually, I discovered that three of the four collaborations had selected their desired ion from the Fe/Cu/Ni group and one, PHOBOS, desired Si. I also asked Thomas Roser if he had a preference among the three closely-grouped heavier ions and he reported that Cu would yield the best luminosity for this group. Accordingly, and in the interest of minimizing efforts in the C-AD for non-productive work in preparing for multiple heavy ion possibilities that are then not needed, I am here directing that the ions for the FY05 heavy ion running will be Cu x Cu. I am aware that this decision comes without discussion by the PAC but it does reflect the desires of 3/4 of the BUPs. I further observe that the needs of PHOBOS can be met in a future Si run if this emerges as scientifically compelling in the RHIC physics program after a first look at Cu x Cu data.
