Upcoming DOE Security audits have caused the need for all RHIC users
to have Life or Guest Numbers. For more details, see the section below
entitled "DOE Audits."

o What Do You Need to Do?

  1. If you have an active BNL life or guest number, you mostlikely
need not do anything. We will be notifying RHIC collaboration with
lists of all accounts we cannot associate with active BNL life or
guest numbers. We will also be sending emails to these users at their
rcf.rhic.bnl.gov email accounts.

  2. If you are a RHIC collaborator and have an account at RCF but DO
NOT currently have an active BNL guest number, you need to register
for a guest appointment using Brookhaven's web-based registration
system by first accessing this web page:

http://www.rhic.bnl.gov/RCF/UserInfo/GettingStarted/NewUser/rcf_account_instructions.html

Do this immediately!

  3. If your RCF account is not matched to an active BNL life or guest
number by July 12, 2004, your access to RCF resources will be
suspended. Access to the RCF can be easily reactivated when you get
an active BNL life or guest number.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you request Remote Computer Access Only on the
registration form you will NOT been given approval for physical access
onto Brookhaven property. If you plan to visit Brookhaven, you should
choose Physical On-site Access to BNL.

o Questions?

The RCF staff will have happy to help you with any questions that
you may have. Send your questions to "useraccts@rcf.rhic.bnl.gov".

o DOE Audits

Brookhaven has two major cyber security audits coming up, a DOE Office
of Counterintelligence audit in August and a DOE Office of Independent
Oversight and Performance Assurance audit in November. We anticipate
that the RHIC Computing Facility (RCF) will be reviewed during both of
these audits.

BNL's responsibilities with respect to cyber security are stated in DOE
Orders 205.1 (Cyber Security Program) and DOE Notice 205.2 (Foreign
National Access to DOE Cyber Systems). BNL management recently provided
guidance which states that all individuals having access to a Brookhaven
computer must hold an active guest status with the laboratory (basically
an RCF account must be matched with an active guest number). This is
not the case for some RCF users and this must be corrected.
