Dear Jens Jorgen,

bearing in mind that "[t]he documents should be prepared at the level of a
scientific paper, but with a secondary criterion of making the arguments
clear to nuclear and particle physicists who are not specialists in RHIC
physics", I would like to suggest a few changes:

page 2:

second paragr.:
delete "(e.g. Au, Pb or U)"

delete "No decisive ........papers)."
There is no need for us to start such a discussion.

replace third para. "With the Rel......plas,a."
by
"With the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, RHIC, at Brookhaven National
Laboratory, the total energy in the center of mass in collisions between
gold nuclei at 100AGeV+100AGeV is almost 40 TeV; the largest so far
achieved in nucleus-nucleus collisions under laboratory conditions."

page 3:

first, second and third para. "The predicted ... CHECK THIS??)."
by
"The predicted transition from ordinary matter - which consists of hadrons
inside which quarks and gluons are confined - to the QGP - a state of
matter in which quark and gluons are no longer confined to volumes of
hadronic dimensions -, has been extensively studied in lattice QCD.
Numerical simulations of lattice QCD predict a dramatic
change in thermodynamic observables like the scaled energy density
to occur around a critical temperature of T_c = 150-180 MeV, where the
quark and gluon condensates melt. Both the deconfinement transition
and the chiral symmetry restoration happen at the same T_c.
Recently, calculational techniques have progressed to the point of
allowing an extension of the lattice methods to finite chemical potential
(ref. Karsch et al). The transition turns from a crossover at small
baryochemical potential into a first order phase transition at high
net-baryon densities."

Continue with "It is, however, ... quenching), etc."

page 4:

delete para. 2-5: "We may .......formulated."

rephrase last para:
"The stopping ...QGP."
like
"The degree of stopping, determines the amount of energy that can be
converted into a material state such as the QGP. A useful way to
quantify the stopping is by the rapidity loss experienced by the baryons
in the colliding nuclei."

page 5:

first para.:
delete "Rapidity ......of a particle."

delete "In the expression .......antibaryons)."

page 6:

second para.:
delete "It is notable.....energies."

page 7:
para. 1+6:
delta_y is 2.0 (NOT 2.2) - at least according to our stopping paper.

delete para. "The central region ......confinement and hadronization."

page 9:
delete para. 2+3: "We may argue ....hadrons."

rename "5. Is there....RHIC?"
into
"Thermal and chemical freeze-out conditions at RHIC"

we (BRAHMS) have no means to proof/falsify equilibrium, but
we can use thermal models to deduce freeze-out conditions.

delete "A central issue is .......the QGP."

page 10:

second para.:
replace "1.5 units" with "one unit"

page 12:

first para:
replace "The observed correlation .....potential"
by
"The observed correlation deviates from the naive expectation,
suggesting a finite value of the strange quark chemical potential."

page 13:

first para.:
delete "This may be ........around midrapidity."

second para.:
title 5.3. "Radial flow" ?

last para.:
delete "The simplest approach...velocity."
rephrase "A more ...approach)."
by
"The blastwave approach employs....velocity."

third para.:
replace "to study the thermodynamic properties of the source"
with
"to study the dynamics of the source"

That's all for now. Comments for chapter 6-8 will follow tomorrow.

With best wishes,
Dieter
