SPY) news channel ======== (1) Some updates about the polarized-proton schedule : The 3 day shutdown period has CHANGED to be Apr. 5-7, 2004 (after the polarized-proton run starts on Apr. 2, 2004). ** Apr. 5, 2004 is a Monday. ** Don't complain about this change because you were warned :-) On April 2, 2004 (08:00), when the gold-gold run finishes and the polarized-proton run starts, RHIC probably won't have beams for ~ 4 hours as George Ganetis will use this period of time to finish the high current test of the RHIC snakes. I said "probably" because if there would be a >4 hour downtime between now and Apr. 2, George may be able to finish his test during the downtime and that 4 hour delay for RHIC on Apr. 2 would disappear. Saving myself one fewer question to answer : the AGS should be running with beams during those 4 hours --- so there is no AGS access for K0PI0 beam testers et. al. ******************************************************************** (2) Successful machine development on Thursday for the lower energy run We've had a very successful machine development for the lower energy run at 31.2 GeV per beam (per nucleon) though a Booster water leak problem delayed the start of the machine development by 4 hours. After ~7 hours of machine development, the machine physicists have managed to give a mini-store (collisions) with 23 bunches for the 4 RHIC experiments to take some data to set up their detector. I let you have the freedom to derive the implication from here for next week's lower energy run ....... ************************************************************ (3) What is so interesting for me this week ? It's a tough first week with RHIC and NSRL (NASA) running simultaneously. One easily feels that we don't have enough time and/or enough people and/or enough accelerator. Doing one program a favor is typically at the expense of another program. Eg. I've got a complaint from an expt. when I allowed the work for the coming polarized-proton run to be extended a couple hours more. I've also got a ~midnight complaint call from a beam expt. person when NSRL was running too long. This was the first midnight complaint that I've managed to get so far in this term of Scheduling Physicist. I have probably been spoiled (by not having any ~3 am complaint) in this FY2004 ... Probably it's because we have had a great RHIC gold-gold run with an integrated (delivered) luminosity ~>4 times of the goal and ~>2 times of the maximum that we thought we could achieve, even though the run is one week shorter than originally planned. I've recently seen people's face muscle much tenser, voices much louder, ... I am just "enjoying" all these experiences that I most likely wouldn't have if I were not this year's scheduling physicist. I begin to worry about the life after this term of Scheduling Physicist :-) I am writing this from the NSRL control room and at the time of writing, the newer/faster iris scanner (for the security/access system) has just stopped working ... and the expert is coming to rescue us (> 22:00 on Friday) ... well I hope. ..... But in my honest opinion, considering the circumstances, we have got through OK. Life goes on no matter what ... ************************************************************ (4) As usual, the next Time meeting is next Tuesday (Mar. 23, 2004) at 13:30 in the Snyder Seminar Room. ====== ======= ====== ======= ====== ======= ====== ======= This SPY news channel solicits YOUR input of any sorts.
