Dear JH,

I read with interest your comment on the
manuscript of Bjorn Samset concerning the
appropriateness of including nuclear
shadowing in the list of nuclear medium effects
in heavy ion collisions.

Nuclear shadowing is a rather large effect
behind many of our mearurements. Cronin effect,
for example, is the sum
of enhancement mechanism (say k_T broadening
due to multiple scattering) and, importantly,
the nuclear shadowing effects. Most theories
of Cronin effects (for instance A. Accardi,
hep-ph/0212148) incorporates the nuclear
shadowing using HIJING parametrization.

Even in our old faithful pseudorapidity
distribution of charged hadrons from AuAu
collision when we are happy to say that our results
agree with HIJING and AMPT we are agreeing
to the presence of nuclear shadowing. Their predictions
always incorporate a large dose of nuclear
shadowing. Direct proof for nuclear shadowing
comes only from the EMC effects (from European
Muon Collaboration) where they saw parton
structure function modification in nuclei.

Whether the nuclear shadowing can replace the
effect of the CGC is beside the point. I may
sound too much like a fan of HIJING, but on
this occasion of Bjorn trying to come up with
the list of important medium effects I suggested
to include the nuclear shadowing in his list.

Sincerely, Yung
