FYI /the info given here on Au RHIC running is in accordance what I wrote you earlier. /fv ---------------------------------------------------------------- Flemming Videbaek Physics Department Brookhaven National Laboratory e-mail: videbaek@bnl.gov phone: 631-344-4106 ----- Original Message ----- From: Kin Yip To: kinyip@fnal.gov Sent: Monday, March 08, 2004 8:02 PM Subject: SPY news update: Time meeting Tuesday (Mar. 9) ... Schedule including NSRL probably down next Wed. ====== Scheduling Physicist -YIP (ie. SPY) news channel ======== Disclaimer: Whatever is being said here is not always 100% accurate though I try my best to avoid being 100% inaccurate :-) ================================================================= (1) The usual Time meeting will happen again on Mar. 9, 2004 (Tuesday) in the Snyder Room (911A) at 13:30. *********************************************************** (2) Schedule this week apart from the normal physics running is : Tuesday (Mar. 9) : 09:00 - 13:00 Machine Development Thursday (Mar. 11) : 07:00 - 19:00 Beam Experiments *********************************************************** (3) Fixing the switch 3L sub-station leads to downtime in NSRL (NASA) ... We need to repair a switch in the power sub-station 3L --- it's said that you may smell something if you go there. This morning, this was said to affect only the LINAC (Linear Accelerator) but after further investigation, the Booster will be affected as well. The repair may take 2 to 8 hours. It's believed that the risk of this going down this Thursday (the earliest day we can fix it) is virtually the same as next Wed. In order to minimize the impact on RHIC, we --- noticing that I used the word "we" here --- have decided to do this next Wed. (Mar. 17) during the scheduled maintenance. In other words, NSRL will be down on Mar. 17, 2004 at least for 2 to 8 hours. Hopefully --- T. Nehring will look into this, we'll provide some alternative power to the Booster vacuum system such that the vacuum system will be maintained during those hours (so that we won't need extra time to bring the vacuum back to acceptable level). *********************************************************** (4) Enough bad news ? Maybe, this is better ... During the weekend, we fixed the problem with the Tandem MP6 (by as many as 8 people --- I was told). Today, we have switched to MP6 for the RHIC operation. The plan has been to pump out MP7 and fix MP7 this evening so that MP7 will stop "sparking" (at high voltage ~14 MV). Hopefully, by Thursday morning, we can switch back to MP7 for the RHIC operation and have MP6 to provide Silicon ions for the NSRL operation. We really need both Tandems to work as NSRL is set to start next Monday (Mar. 15). The no. of degrees of freedom is diminishing as the NSRL starting date is looming. Remember that at the same time, the polarized-proton machine physicists are trying to make use of whatever time they can have behind the RHIC stores. Tomorrow during machine development, bunch merging work will also be done in parallel to the RHIC work. I am not sure whether our machine schedule has ever been so complicated before ! *********************************************************** (5) It is said that we'll hear whether we'll have an extension beyond the 12 week gold-gold run this Wed. at the earliest. ====== ======= ====== ======= ====== ======= ====== ======= This SPY news channel solicits YOUR input of any sorts.
