Subject: SPY news update: Warm snake installation ... probably not a record lumi. weekend ... Time Meeting on Feb. 10, 2004

====== Scheduling Physicist -YIP (ie. SPY) news channel ========

(1) Warm snake (a special magnet) installation for the coming polarized-proton run

Everybody who told me about the ~12 hour warm snake installation
has been really happy about what we accomplished last Wednesday
(Feb. 4, 2004). At the end, we even connected the main power cables
(like 14 of them) which we thought we might not have time to do.

At least, the following groups were involved at about the same period of time:

Subgroups in the Experimental Support & Facilities Division:

Water (Plumbing) Systems -- J. de Boer
    Survey -- F. Karl
    Electrical Services -- P. Valli
& the rigging crew --- A. Korol (who, originally from Plant Engineering,
work with us all the time)

and subgroups in the Accelerator Division:

Power Supply Systems - M. Bannon
     Vacuum Systems - S. Gill
      Instrumentation - D. Lehn

( I just find it interesting to list them all here.)

Using R. Alforque's words, it's a great effort by all the personnel involved
and there was almost no interference among the workers in the ring.
Thanks also go to Ray Zaharatos/J. Benante/R. Alforque for the successful
coordination.

Of course, a lot of works were done before last Wed. (such as G. George's
magnet group testing the magnet/magnetic field) to make this installation possible.

More pictures will be shown in the coming Time meeting ..........

(2) Probably not a record luminosity weekend ....... (Tandem sparks

Among other incidents, the Tandom MP7 sparked a few times again on Friday ----
well I remember something like that happened 1 month or 2 ago. Sparking forced
us to stay at a lower voltage ~13kV (and thus lower beam intensity). We tried to go
to another charge state at one stage (Au+13 instead of Au+12) but it didn't seem to
provide the necessary intensity. Though later we were able to go back to the usual
charge state at the normal voltage (~14kV) for some time, that MP7 sparked again.
This early morning, we switched to use the other MP6 but that MP6 needs more
tuning to provide adequate intensity.

We actually have customers/users for the Tandem MP6. We stopped them from
doing their work last night/this early morning. The plan, as I understand it, is that
after we tune MP6 to our satisfaction and it becomes stable, we'll try to fix the
problems (eg. ion pump) in MP7 which probably makes it unusable for a few days.
Hopefully, by the end of next week, we can switch back to MP7 so that our customers
can start using MP6 again. For our current settings, the customers cannot
use MP7 but only MP6. Right now, we don't have as many customers as sometime
later in March and so some schedule reshuffling can be done without too much pain.

---- Part of the reason of writing all this is for myself so that I may remember in the future
what I have learnt today and before today !

On top of this, the RHIC injection seemed to have problems at times as well that
the bunch intensities in RHIC seemed lower (eg. 0.7 vs 0.9) than usual. The new
RhicInjection application also is being perfected at the time of writing.

I don't anticipate this week that we can break last week's luminosity .......

in the Snyder Room (911A).
