The machine guys have together with Kirk decided that RHIC can go into production mode wheil some machine dev will continue. The intensities delivered are reasonable, but re-bicketing could be better. enclosed is the message from Wolfram, which was later followed up by one from Kirk. We will keep a close eye on the delivered 'vertex'd distribution since this is critical for our performance. Our plan from now over the weekend is essentially to develop the trigger setup, togehter with runs for additional cheking out of detectors. Flemming PS Happy new year. our proposal is to start counting physics luminosity with the next store with successful rebucketing. This brings a few changes in the way the machine operates: (1) Today and tomorrow our emphasis is on establishing stable stores (56 bunches, 0.5e9/bunch) with rebucketing. (2) On Friday we will need the day shift for machine work to respond to observations made on Wednesday and Thursday. (3) We plan to run for physics from Friday afternoon (Jan 2) throughout the weekend. (4) As stable stores are established, more store features will be phased in over time (faster steering, collimation, background minimization, more storage rf). (5) From today, there will be only one machine shift leader per day. The shift leader will lead the machine development work, when scheduled, and is on call should there be problems. The call period starts 8am and lasts 24 hours. The shift schedule is updated. (6) We will have about 4 shifts per week for further machine development. These are likely to be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Our preference is to have the day shifts, but we may have machine development in the evening. We will update machine development plans weekly. On Wednesday we will have beam experiments and maintenance, the weekends will be devoted to luminosity production. (7) Finally, there will be less 8:30 RHIC meetings. RHIC meetings will be only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 to 9:00, to make plans for luminosity development, and discuss improvements requested by the experiments. (Dejan's Monday meeting at 11am has its with emphasis on longer-term RHIC isssues.) The next 8:30 meeting is on Friday, 2 January 2004. Despite a few setbacks, this Run's start-up and ramp-up period was shorter than in the past, and we start with good luminosity. Thanks to all of you, especially for the dedicated efforts over the weekends and holiday periods.
