Dear Collaborator,

As you can see there may be a finite chanche that RHIC will start physics before the current planned day 1/7.
This may imply that the run could start just around ~ 12/30 or 12/31. I think it is important to have at least
lined up the initial shifts for this period and will make it over this weekend (covering until end of Jan). Thus I
do also need to know actual dates when people are here in January.
I enclose at end of this e-mail the list+dates as I have reasonably confirmed. There are additional
commitment from NBI and Oslo, but yet w/o specific dates.

Flemming

====== Scheduling Physicist -YIP (ie. SPY) news channel ========

(1) Next Monay, Dec. 22, 2003, we will have a mainly RHIC access between
      07:00 to 15:00.

Among other things, STAR will make their last effort on Monday (if not before)
to chase their Time Projection Chamber (TPC) short (circuit). The plan is to
"button STAR back up" (using Bill's words) on Monday whether they locate the
short or not. I understand that if they couldn't find this TPC short, they'll have
to calculate to correct for this undesirable effect. Hopefully by the end of Monday,
we'll be able to turn on the STAR's magnet and the machine physicists may start
to tune the machine with the STAR magnet on.

(2) Status & Plan in my view:

We've finally had collisions shortly before 10:00 this Friday morning.
If anyone is worrying, the plan is to have collisions for the experiments
this midnight (until 08:00 on Sat.).

We haven't had collisions and successful ramp for 2 days (since ~07:00 on
Dec. 17), which is about the longest continuous off-time since the C3
inflector/C5 magnet incident in Booster in early Oct., 2003.

The AGS RF control box took us ~24 hours to repaired --> quite a few people
have worked for quite a lot of hours. This "box" is said to be ~15 years old
(using eg. GPIB communication bus). Almost at the same time, the RF group
has come up with another "box" which they have made for Booster and can
be used to replace the old RF control box. This new "box" uses VME 64x
standard with eg. DSP ----- something that I am a bit more familiar with.
So, next time if the old box strikes again, we may just try using the new box.

(3) Last night, about the time that we fixed the AGS RF control box but
Tandem had sparking problem --- ~10 (+/-1 ) pm, I was
asked about the plan for last midnight till this morning in an email from
an expt. spokesperson. Realizing that, I made up my mind, replied to the
email, called MCR and then called the other expts' control room/coordinator.
I basically said that they shouldn't expect to have collisions before 4 am and
hopefully we could provide some collisions for them between 4 am and 8 am.
Unfortunately, it turned out that we didn't manage to deliver any collisions
before 8 am.

In the longer term, though the original schedule is to have physics production
run on ~Jan. 5/7, I think the experiments should prepare their shifts for the
physics production to be started one week before Jan. 5, 2004. We can't
promise. However, it'll be a much bigger disaster if the physics run is ready
to start but an expt. shift plan is not ready.

An English fellow whom I met in Britain once told me a sentence with
some rhymes:

hope for the best, prepare for the worst and get what it comes !!

------- something probably compatible with various philosophies :-)

(4) The usual Time meeting will be held at 13:30 on Dec. 23, 2003
in the Snyder Room.
