[Brahms-l] [Fwd: SPY news update: collisions have begun]

FYI,

Rhic seems to be making nice progress -
we have to make some progress soon to ensure we are ready for beam.
It is still too early to say when physics running will start.
But I will not be surprised if it happens before Jan 5 at this rate of
progress.

====== Scheduling Physicist -YIP (ie. SPY) news channel ========

I've been hesitating whether I should write or not this Sat..... but why
 not ?!

(1) Since Thursday afternoon/evening (Dec. 11, 2003), we have had
collisions in all RHIC experiments. The ZDC's in the STAR expt.
didn't function properly on Thursday but the problems were fixed on
Friday. I have seen collision rates higher than 600 Hz in the PHENIX
expt. In fact, Sat. morning (3:26 am from the logbook), PHENIX was
asking whether the machine people could stay in "store" (the mode of
having continuous collisions) for an hour or so but unfortunately, no
other experiments were around.

PHOBOS has given me a time difference plot of two counters at
opposite sides of their first collisions. Enthusiam seems more and
more prominent......

(2) On Friday, it was found that a vacuum leak in the bellows of a
multiwire instrument "HARP" --- it is called because it looks like a
HARP with so many wires --- had developed. The vacuum group has locked
the HARP in the retracted position and sprayed/sealed the bellows.
When the vaccuum group leader passed my office this Sat. morning, I was
told that the vacuum went back to the original level.

This HARP cannot be used unless we replace it. We are trying to see
how "painful" it may be to have our operation without it. If we need to
replace it, a re-baking seems necessary. During the discussion with the
Booster experts and the vacuum group leader after the repair work
finished late Friday evening, a continuous 28 hour period may be
sufficient. This HARP is a useful diagnostic tool. We'll see ......
