First Announcement of FPhaR Workshop Forward Physics at RHIC October 9th 2003, BNL We have organized an informal one-day workshop to discuss the physics opportunities and instrumentation challenges associated with developing a forward-physics program at RHIC. These discussions may lead to a formal proposal to pursue such a program. The meeting will be held from 10am to 4pm on October 9th 2003 at BNL. The physics topics that could be components of a forward-physics program span many areas. They cover detailed studies of gluon saturation, wide coverage of the QCD phase diagram, extension of the heavy-ion program to center of mass energies between the AGS and RHIC, topics in spin physics and measurements relevant to cosmic-ray physics and exotic phenomena. Some initial ideas on the instrumentation of a forward-physics facility include the development of a fixed target capability and the development of enhanced performance spectrometers covering an angular range extending to the most forward rapidities. The meeting will be comprised of a number of talks and discussions designed to focus on these issues with the intent of assessing their scientific viability. Further discussions would focus on how to submit the more promising subject to the RHIC management.
