Hi all, Sorry about the late reply on this topic, but I had a zillion things to do. "Peter H. L. Christiansen" <pchristi@nbi.dk> wrote concerning Re: BRAHMS CVS repisitories for papers and drafts [Mon, 16 Jun 2003 11:09:10 +0200 (CEST)] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > Hi Bjørn ^ Using 8bit encoding in mails sent to the list, may make a some people slightly annoyed at you. All those that use Micros**t Outlook of an older date have some real problems reading UTF-8 encoded emails. >From Peter's header: Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit There's also a couple of people who like to use 8bit encodings in the subject field - that's a bad habit, as the internet mail protocol does not really have room for 8bit encodings in the header, which the subject field is part of. > Great initiative! I think we should have the full source (LaTeX, XFig, ROOT scripts, etc.) available in the CVS repository, under say /afs/rhic/brahms/BRAHMS_CVS/papers/{phd,master,...}/<user name> or /afs/rhic/brahms/BRAHMS_CVS/papers/<user name>_{phd,master,...} > On Mon, 16 Jun 2003, Bjorn H Samset wrote: > > > > > Hello everyone. > > > > As discussed by some of us at the collaboration meeting (and > > earlier), there has been a need for a CVS repository for paper > > drafts for use by the diverse paper committees. I created the subdirectory `papers' in /afs/rhic/brahms/BRAHMS_CVS/papers a long time ago, while I was pushing for a central archive of such stuff. I don't see any reason why we should have separate repositories for drafts and finished version. After all, that's what you have version numbers and tags for. As always, version numbers < 1.0 are drafts, version 1.0 is the_in_principle finished story, and versions > 1.0 are revision after the referees have given comments, and ladida. Also, one can use tags like `DRAFT-1', `TO-REFEREES', `SUBMITTED', `IN-PRINT', `LATE-CORRECTIONS', and so on. In short, there's no reason for the extra bookkeeping (after all, that's what CVS is all about - removing the tiresome burden of bookkeeping, among other things). One of the reason why CVS is so slow, is because it's sitting on an AFS disk. Instead, it should be sitting on some normal disk, and server via a CVS server. > > > > So I've gone ahead and added one, importing a dir. > > /afs/rhic/brahms/BRAHMS_CVS/brahms_papers > > which you can get via the normal method: > > > klog > > > cvs checkout brahms_papers > > > > Apology: > > I know the name should rather have been draft_papers or somethig like > > that, but I apparently had some kind of mental shortcircuit when importing > > this. I hope you can live with it. [1] It's actually easy to rename: > ssh rssh.rhic.bnl.gov \ ssh rcas0001 \ mv /afs/rhic/brahms/BRAHMS_CVS/brahms_papers \ /afs/rhic/brahms/BRAHMS_CVS/papers/drafts > > I encourage all groups working on paper drafts to place them here, both > > for your own sake and for the collaboration. And do please use Autotools - it's sooooo cool when you can check out a full repository, and just do ./configure --prefix=${HOME} make world make install There's an example of how to do that in one of the existing directories of `papers'. Note that the example also uses some neat LaTeX tricks to mark the version number, and CVS revision. > > Maybe we should also have a repository for thesises? (Thesi?) I intent to put my master thesis in `brahms_app/cholm_app/master_thesis', but if a consensus is reach that dictates somewhere else in the master repository, I'm cool with that too. > > Finally, if noone objects I will add the source for all our > > published papers (the one we've sent to the Los Alamos archive) to > > papers. The only thing is, that people that have already checked out the stuff will not be able to do `cvs update', unless they change some of the CVS/* files (which is quite obvious).
