Dear Collaborator, The startup of the pp-run has been nothing but smooth. Plagued first by recent budget problems imposed by the federal government made the lab dig deep to find funds for running until May 16, an second by a quench of the Siberian snake in the yellow ring. The later means that only partial, but sufficient polarization can be achieved , and it has been decided the run will go on. A two day access will end during the night, and RHIC will continue operations. It is expected the machine will be turned over to physics operation on the 25(26). Until then the overnights will be for physics setup and stores, most likely starting Saturday night. Since the detector systems are essentially ready to go, we will start the survey measurement during these shifts – the luminosity may not be optimal but for the lower field setting this will yields reasonable rates. Collisions of good quality were observed Tuesday morning. A preliminary shift list will be posted before the weekend. The repair of the T3 drift chamber has started; Tomasz an Radek are at BNL and has started the disassembly of the modules in the lab at physics. Hopefully the module will be re-installed next week.
