    Subject: this weekend / Westinghouse

    Hi everybody,

I have good and bad news. Good news is that blue proton beam (1
bunch) is circulating and captured. Lifetime improvements and capture
are still being worked on. The weekend will be spent on getting yellow
and blue circulating and captured (with the option of colliding beam at
injection energy during the nights). On saturday we will dedicate some
hours on PLL work (provided beam is stable enough).
So far we could not measure more than 30 % polarisation at AGS
extraction energy (Gy 46.5). At this point the spin crew is working on
beam quality (transverse emittance) rather than polarisation.

The bad news is coming from the Westinghouse. Westinghouse motor and
generator were inspected today by a GE expert. Rotors and brushes on the
motor side show significant damage where the graphite brushes started
scratching into the rotor material. It is unclear at this point how much
more than a few days the Westinghouse can be operated safely. A repair
would probably take approximately 1 week (first guess) :( :(. This issue
will be discussed first thing monday moring with the chief engineer.
I'll let you know as soon as this is settled how we're going to cope
with it. Since any planing strongly depends on the outcome of this
discussion, I'll not add a preliminary schedule for ring access next
week. However, in case the Westinghouse repair can be delayed, a minimum
of 30 minutes access will be granted to STAR for a BBC recabling on
    monday.

In any case, have a nice weekend,
