    Dear Collaborator,

I forward the minutes from last weeks RHIC planning meeting.
As discussed during the coll meeting last week it also attempts to outline
    the overall run possibilities until
the end of run in January 2002.

    Subject: RHIC Machine/Detector Planning Meeting

    > The next RHIC Planning meeting will be:
    >
    > WEDNESDAY, MAY 2, 1:30 PM
    > BLDNG. 911 LG. CONF. RM.
    >
    > At this meeting we should initiate a discussion of the
    > installation/setup requirements for the pp run (i.e., what access time
    > is needed for the experiments during the switch-over to proton
    > collisions, and is this compatible with the plans of the machine
    > commissioners?)
    >
    > Some notes from last Wednesday's meeting are attached below.

    > Notes from April 25 RHIC Machine/Detector Planning Meeting:
    >
    > The cooldown process has now begun. The present schedule will have the
    > rings cold by June 1. Beams may be brought into the injection arcs
    > sooner than this, and it should be expected that access to experimental
    > areas will end ~May 18.
    >
    > Note that the collider ring will be posted as a controlled area on May
    > 1.
    >
    > The present run plan (posted on the web by Phil Pile) calls for
    > full-energy AuAu collisions July - Sept., pp commissioning and
    > data-taking Oct. - Nov., and heavy ion running starting up again in
    > December for a period which, by present budget projections, will last ~6
    > weeks. Tom Kirk reiterated that the mode of operation during this final
    > segment will be determined after consultation with the PAC (meeting
    > Sept. 28-29), with input from Beam Use Proposals and the experience of
    > the earlier portions of the run. Thomas Roser will prepare an "impact
    > statement" on the machine time needed to implement various options, such
    > as an energy scan or lighter ion beams.
    >
    > Tom Throwe reported on the schedule for installation of new equipment in
    > RCF. this will provide adequate storage and processing capacity for the
    > FY2001 part of the upcoming run. The Requirements Task Force has now
    > completed an assessment of the additional capacity needed to complete
    > the run as planned in FY2002. Laboratory and RCF management are working
    > on a plan to fund purchases of the necessary equipment in time for
    > installation during the pp run. Activity associated with the mini mock
    > data challenge, now in progress, has smoked out some problems with
    > HPSS. This is being dealt with.
    >
    > Start-up activities for the experiments are still progressing on
    > schedule.
