Folks, here is the schedule for the upgrades of our linux cluster. All work starts around 10:00-11:00 am. Tue 06 Feb 2001: install the new 36 Gbyte disks on pii3 (done) Tue 13 Feb 2001: move home directories to the new home disk upgrade pii6, pii7, pii8 to RedHat 6.2. (the pii3 work should take a few hours and the mysql server should not be affected, pii upgrades will be done one at a time and will continue next day if we run out of time). pii9 remains untouched. Tue 20 Feb 2001: move pii3 back to the C.H. move pii3 from subnet 16 to subnet 68 (IP address changes!) (this will take from 11:00 am until at least 15:00 pm). Tue 27 Feb 2001: pii9 upgrade to RedHat 6.2, unless we need a 6.1 machine because something cannot be made to work with RedHat 6.2. Attached below is the complete list of pii cluster work items and the complete upgrade plan. Notice the "final state" section at the very end. K.O. ----- Forwarded message from Konstantin Olchanski <olchansk@ux1.phy.bnl.gov> ----- Date: Tue, 6 Feb 2001 14:45:33 -0500 From: Konstantin Olchanski <olchansk@ux1.phy.bnl.gov> To: mcbreen@bnl.gov, videbaek@bnl.gov Cc: Konstantin Olchanski <olchansk@ux1.phy.bnl.gov> Subject: overlate pii cluster upgrade plan User-Agent: Mutt/1.2.5i Betty, Flemming: here is the overlate pii cluster upgrade plan. First, the work items that need to be done, roughly in order of decreased importance: 1. pii3 work items: a) install the SCSI card and connect the 36 Gbyte disk array b) move home directories to the new disk array (18 Gbytes become mirrored 36 Gbytes) c) move pii3 to C.H. (need to decide on final location- depends on the pp2pp C.H. sharing- what else moves around in the C.H.). d) move pii3 from subnet-16 to subnet-68. 2. pii6-pii9 work items: a) upgrade from RedHat 6.1 to RedHat 6.2 with - openssh - arla afs - stock redhat 6.2 kernel b) repartitions disks to increate swap partition from 100 Mbytes to 1000 Mbytes (same as pii4 and pii5). c) ensure uniform rpms between all RedHat 6.2 pii's. 3. pii10 work items: a) decide to keep as it (RedHat 7.0, incompatible with other pii's) or convert to RedHat 6.2 (same other pii's). 4. pii2 work items: a) test OpenAFS b) upgrade to latest 2.4 kernel (2.4.0->2.4.1). c) upgrade to RedHat 7.1 (7.1 beta was released last month). And the time line: 1a- install new disks on pii3: today, Tue 6 Feb 2001 after 17:00. 1b- move home dirs to new disk: Tue 13 Feb 2001. 1c, 1d- Tue 20th Feb 2001. 2- pii6-9 upgrade: Tue 13 Feb 2001 do pii6, pii7, pii8. Keep pii9 uptouched until everybody is happy with the upgrade. 2- upgrade last RedHat 6.1 pii (pii9) to RedHat 6.2: Tue 27 Feb 2001. 3- decide on the pii10 fate by 13 Feb 2001. 4- pii2 updates- done as time permits. The final state: - pii3 running RH 7.0 (same as now), with new home disk (36 Gbytes) backed up to DLT and incrementals to opus disk2 (same as now). - pii4-pii9 running RH 6.2 in identical configuration. - pii10 running either RH 7 or RH 6.2 - pii2 running RH 7 (7.0 or 7.1), stays in the DAQ lab as the TPC DAQ computer and general test platform.
