Folks, as I was just about to announce that the new and improved pii4 is back in business, when I have discovered that it's ethernet connection runs at 10 Mbit/sec instead of 100 Mbit/sec. So far it is not clear if the fault is with pii4 or the Cisco switch, and attempts to force the connection into the 100 Mbit/sec state have failed. So: Please do not use pii4 for any data-intensive tasks. It is okey as a terminal, but, for example, reading data from the opus disks is very extremely slow. This is maddening because the new pii4 is the fastest computer we currently have, with 2 800 MHz P-III CPUs, that cannot be put to good use. Why is there a "new pii4"? The old pii4 developed a hardware problem and was crashing (resetting&rebooting) all the time (many times per day) and became basically useless. To fix this problem I have swapped the system unit with a brand new computer. The monitor and disks are from pii4, so there is no change in any installed software, except for X11. The new computer has been running stable for the last two days, and I was about to announce it's availability for general use when this networking problem came up. Also note that the computer is fine for use as a terminal, it's only when you try to read big data files from opus or elsewhere that things are slow (but still work). -- Konstantin Olchanski Physics Department, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Long Island, New York olchansk@bnl.gov
