Hi Hiro, Hironori Ito <hito@rcf.rhic.bnl.gov> wrote concerning software included in rcf upgrade [Wed, 13 Aug 2003 15:14:05 -0400] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > Hello. In the rcf upgrade this summer, they will install Intel > C/C++/Fortran compiler as we wished. However, they will not install > latex, xv, xfig. For latex, they tell us to use from rcf2. To do that, use some other machine, like one of the PII's or something. Also, RCF2 is a Solaris machine (sigh!), and I have no idea how well ROOT/BRAT/BRAG/... compiles on that platform. Some plabber: If you've ever tried to develop cross-platform stuff, you quickly realise that Solaris sucks big time (Konstantin will probably hit me on the head for this). The point is, that GNU/Linux has (almost) all of the features of the various UNIX(tm)'es and BSD's, while Solaris has a rather limited API (Not entirely POSIX!), and a rather poor tool chain. If you're think windoze is much better, think again. Developing on Windoze is like sticking your tongue out the window when you really want a cigarette, not funny. Wonder why most frameworks that aim for both UNIX(tm) and Windows has so many of the basic features? Well, it's because Windows has none, so to be portable, they have to re-implement almost all features.
