Dear all, I must agree with Christian about the best (or maybe 'least nonoptimal') solution to the problem of vanishing/changing code. Perhaps some users do not want choice, fine, they get the default and do not need to worry about things (given a reasonable choice of /pro ). There are others though who may need/want to use older and/or newer versions of BRAT/ROOT, and so this *must* be possible. In short, Christian's scripts, together with an agreed upon procedure for deciding and changing what is /old , /new,/pro, /dev, seem like a very reasonable solution. At BNL, (perhaps everywhere?) this could be accomplished via /afs/rhic/brahms/$BRAHMS_SYS/brahms_login.csh and the root/brat version can be put on afs ala Kris Hagel. One hopes that this could eliminate some of the approximately 47,348 individual versions of the software that are floating around.
