    Dear all,
I must agree with Christian about the best (or maybe 'least nonoptimal')
solution to the problem of vanishing/changing code.
Perhaps some users do not want choice, fine, they get the default and do
not need to worry about things (given a reasonable choice of
    /pro ).
There are others though who may need/want to use older and/or newer
versions of BRAT/ROOT, and so this *must* be possible.
In short, Christian's scripts, together with an agreed upon procedure for
    deciding and changing what is /old , /new,/pro, /dev, seem like a
very reasonable solution. At BNL, (perhaps everywhere?) this could be
    accomplished via
    /afs/rhic/brahms/$BRAHMS_SYS/brahms_login.csh
and the root/brat version can be put on afs ala Kris Hagel. One hopes
that this could eliminate some of the approximately 47,348 individual
versions of the software that are floating around.
    Best regards,
    Ian--------------------------------------------------------------------
