From: BNLHI2::BEAVIS 5-JUN-1997 15:10:28.06 To: VIDEBAEK,OLNESS,BNLDAG::DPHILLIPS CC: BEAVIS Subj: Review of Facilities/infrastructure Progress 6/2/97 D. Beavis I)Magnets D1: First coil has been tested and second coil is being fabricated. Prints for the iron are being copied and should be sent to the shops by the end of the week (6/6/97). D5: Iron parts are fabricated and as a secondary job being fitted to the existing core. First coil has been wound and should be potted soon. Engineer will travel to Calif. in about two weeks to inspect the D1 and D5 coils. D3: Coil design are done. Iron design is done and just needs checking. Checking delayed while an issue for the septum plate is considered. D4: Final choice of a specific 18D72 magnet has not been made. D2: Progress continuing to finalize design parameters. Platforms: Plan views and elevation views have been done for the mid-rapidity and front forward platforms. Some layout numbers are pending from the experiment for the back FS platform. It is expected that only the motor, pivot bearing, and wheels from the existing E866 platform will be used for the mid-rapidity platform. The Henry Higgins platform is not considered useful for BRAHMS. It is unlikely that the Moby Dick platform can be used due to the smaller floor to beam height distance. It is not expected that substantial engineering and design will be need for the platforms. This needs a refined evaluation and the possible funds saved should be used where need to maintain schedule. Infrastructure: Mezzanine A new vendor quote of 20k$ for the mezzanine is in with the appropriate grating and support columns. The vendor will supply design prints and cost could increase 2-3k$ if it is evaluated to be union work. The building modifications of removing/moving the air handling, moving the lights, and adding th access door could start soon. Funds are sufficient this year to complete this work. Water System Options are being considered for the water system. Concerns of potential environmental issues are being folded into the design parameters. D. Beavis will contact RHIC about whether the system needs to be considered for potential activation. Goal is to develope a specification for outside firms to bid on including the engineering and design. Power The design for the power distribution is expected to start in August when the RHIC designer becomes available. Hardware A list of hardware to purchase before the end of the fiscal year needs to be developed. These items should be purchased if sufficient funds remain and include cable tray, AC disconnect switches, and other items which may allow early installation next year and avoid waiting for parts delivery.
