Some highlights of construction progress in August from my observations. Not all activities are mentioned. I will also like to draw your attention to the third quarter progress report submitted to RHIC end of August and posted on our Web pages.
- The installation preparation for the Counting house has been completed. Installation is expected by mid September. The Front Electronics hut is in place and installation of A/C power, air conditioning is underway.
- The water system mechanical and electric assembly contracts have been awarded.
- The front forward platform design is progressing well, components have been purchased and assembly will soon start.
- About 4 km of DC conductor cable for the magnets has been laid in place between the IR and the power supply building 1002.
- The C1 vessel construction is well underway in central shops. Completion in the shops is expected by early September. Installation of mirrors and PMTs will take place in the laboratory. The design for the filling tank has started
- The order for 1/4 of the RICH PMTs and the focal plane assembly has been placed with Hamamatsu.
- The Drift Chamber electronics has gone into the design phase. This has become an urgent matter since LeCroy cannot any longer supply the L2735DC cards that were planned for this detector.
- The testing of prototype TPC receiver is proceeding well. Most of the basic functionality's have been tested, and board corrections applied. Systematic and longer term testing using the rosebud board and VME processor based test programs is about to start.
- The mini-DAQ VME / Vxworks based system was implemented at BNL with NBI hardware. This is to be used in beam test in Aarhus. Fastbus code and drivers are being implemented and tested. Event building code on WinNT has been implemented and tested. A raw data format has been proposed.
- Development of the BRAT software is continuing with particular aim of having a package ready for track reconstruction and analysis for the RCF -RHIC Mock Data Challenge in September. Several Perl-scripts that will help in the MDC-I task have been written and debugged. Many subtle errors in the Brat C++ classes has been identified and corrected.
